5/2/2021: IMHM Executive Director Sarah Halter was honored today by the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Caroline Scott Harrison Chapter when she was presented a certificate of award and medal from the Historic Preservation Committee for Excellence in Historic Preservation.

3/18/2020: Today we said goodbye to Dr. Charles A. Bonsett. Dr. Bonsett was working at Central State Hospital when the Pathological Department was closed in 1968 and slated for demolition. He and his colleagues worked tirelessly and invested their own funds to save the building and establish the Indiana Medical History Museum. Dr. Bonsett's support and enthusiasm never wavered, and to the end he was still a member of the Edenharter Circle and attended nearly every event. Without him the Indiana Medical History Museum would not exist and the Old Pathology Building would not have survived. We are so grateful to him for, and he will be sorely missed. Obituary

8/17/2017: Just in time for GenCon, the Indiana Medical History Museum made the list of 14 Amazingly Nerdy Places in Indy.  See who else made the cut here.

8/16/2017: IMHM Executive Director Sarah Halter is one of twelve history professionals nation-wide selected to participate in the American Association for State and Local History's immersive three-week training program Developing History Leaders @SHA.  Read more.

8/2/2017: Indiana Humanities has received a $300,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to fund a fleet of programs inspired by the classic novel Frankenstein, which turns 200 in 2018. As a result of this funding, organizations from across Indiana will have the opportunity to participate in a statewide read and to bring innovative humanities-based programming to their communities to discuss the book and its themes. This year-long, state-wide series of events kicks off right here at the Indiana Medical History Museum with Frankenfest on Saturday, September 30th!

3/11/2017: The States of Incarceration traveling exhibit is coming soon to the Central Library in Indianapolis. The IUPUI-curated portion of the exhibit explores intersections of mass incarceration and mental illness, as well as a series of public programs on topics like prison education and re-entry.

3/9/2017: The Indiana Medical History Museum has been nominated for "Best Museum" on the Indy A-List.

1/6/2017: Our recently acquired foreign bodies cabinet was featured on the IU Health News Hub: The Bizarre, Long-lost Objects Found Inside Patients’ Bodies

1/5/2017:  WTHR reports, the IMHM just received a $50,000 Heritage Support Grant from the Indiana Historical Society, funded by the Lilly Endowment, to replace our three leaky skylights.

2016

9/2/2016: Our Indiana Historical Bureau marker to commemorate Central State Hospital was delivered today!  Stay tuned for details about our upcoming unveiling ceremony.

6/14/2016:  We're thrilled to announce that we have received a matching Historic Preservation Fund grant from the National Park Service for the second year in a row!  This $47, 400 grant will help cover the cost of the rest of the exterior masonry.  We'll begin this project in the coming months and complete it this fall.

5/12/2016: Thanks to individual donations and a grant through Indiana Landmarks from the Marion County Preservation Fund, we have now completed the masonry work on the north and east elevations of the Old Pathology Building.  We removed old mortar that was smeared on the brick faces, repointed where needed, and replaced spalled and broken bricks.

4/28/2016: Although we remain on Indiana Landmarks' watch list, we have been left off of the Indiana Landmarks' 10 Most Endangered List for 2016!  We have a long way to go, but we're very proud of our progress so far!  Thanks to all of our Capital Campaign donors who have made this possible.  And thank you for your continued support as we forge ahead.

11/29/2015:  IMHM is featured in this week's My Money MD column by Shirley Mueller, MD in Physician's Money Digest. 

11/20/2015:  Winter Hours begin Saturday, December 12th.  From 12/12/2015 through 1/16/2016, IMHM will be open for public tours on Saturdays only.

11/9/2015: Work began on Phase I of repairs to the Old Pathology Building! Masonry work on the roof, such as re-pointing, replacing damaged bricks, and repairing chimneys, is the first step; Phase I work will also include replacing the shingled and membrane roofs of the building and repairing and reattaching gutters. Learn more about our effort to save the Old Pathology Building.

10/13/2015: A Time Capsule from the year 1958 was found in the cornerstone of the Bahr Treatment Center on the former Central State Hospital Grounds this summer. The time capsule contained audio and video recordings and documents commemorating the inauguration of the Treatment Center, as well as newspapers from July 1958. We posted a photo album of these materials, which are currently on loan at the museum, on our Facebook page, and we plan to display them at the museum soon (watch our website and social media for more details).  Here are some links to news coverage about the time capsule.

10/9/2015: Grave Robbing in Central Indiana was the subject of a talk at the annual meeting for the Hoosier Chapter of the Victorian Society in America, hosted by the IMHM on October 9. This event was mentioned in NUVO and covered in an article from Will Higgins at Indy Star.  

9/26/2015: Seeking Asylum, the event we presented with Indiana Landmarks on September 26, was covered by Victoria Davis from the Indianapolis Recorder. Davis talks about the program, preservation and development at Central State, and our Capital Campaign to save the Old Pathology Building.

8/10/2015The IMHM's Capital Campaign is the featured cover story in the new August issue of the Indianapolis Medical Society Bulletin. 

6/8/2015:  IMHM is excited to announce that it has received a $50,000 matching Historic Preservation Fund grant from the National Park Service toward replacing the roof on the Old Pathology Building and other "gutters & up" work which will begin shortly.  This is the first phase of a massive repair and restoration project to stabilize and preserve the Old Pathology Building.

2014

5/29/2014: On Monday, June 2 at 10:30 am Mayor Greg Ballard, City/County Councilor Marilyn Pfisterer, and the Indiana Medical History Museum will dedicate a new grave marker in the Central State Hospital Cemetery (182 North Tibbs Avenue).

4/4/2014: NASA's Destination Station is making a stop at the museum! Mark your calendar for Wednesday, April 30 at 6pm for a presentation by a NASA scientist about medical advances aboard the International Space Station. RSVP at education@imhm.org

10/31/2009: A group of nurses in Indianapolis for the 40th Biennial Convention of the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) visited the Indiana Medical History Museum, sponsored by the Virginia Henderson International Nursing Library.   One of them wrote an article about the experience.
