CURRENT POSITIONS

Anyone with a passion for learning and sharing knowledge is welcome!

Docent

Job Description

Trained docents provide IMHM visitors with a thematic one-hour tour of the Old Pathology Building to both scheduled groups and drop-in visitors. Docents create an engaging educational atmosphere for museum visitors and effectively communicate the emergence of modern medicine at the turn of the 20th century, not to mention science, mental health care, architecture, local history and much more!

The Old Pathology Building has a living historical presence and is more than a facsimile of the past.  The building “is as it was” and its authenticity creates an extraordinary connection to the past.  Further enhancing the visitor experience is the individualized attention the visitor receives while touring the museum.  Guided tours allow the visitor to ask questions that are important to them, give the docent the opportunity to expand on the interpretive themes of the museum, and create an atmosphere of unity between the past and present.

Time Commitment and Training

Docents are asked to commit regularly  and come in at least twice a month for full or partial days.

Our volunteers work during our open hours: Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays 10-4 and occasionally for special tours and events.

Training for the position  requires docents to learn a sizable amount of historical information, follow tours, and more. All materials will be provided!

Qualifications

All docents must be 18 or older. The tours cover two floors and last an hour or more - if you have limited mobility and cannot climb stairs or stand for long periods of time, please check out our Greeter Position!

In addition to giving tours, there may also be opportunities to work on projects related to collections, cataloging, and/or clerical work.

Visitor Services Assistant (Greeter)

Job Description

The Greeter admits visitors, performs check-in duties, and answers general inquiries. Because he/she provides the initial impression of the museum, we are looking for someone who is comfortable with handling money, enjoys interacting with others, and is enthusiastic!

Time Commitment and Training

The Greeter is asked to work at least one day each week (full or partial days), during our open hours:  Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays 10-4. Greeter training will be done in house and he/she receives the same resource materials as the docents.

Qualifications

You must be 18 or older. The physical demands for this position are low and it is open to those with limited mobility. This position does require an ability to perform simple functions on a iPad (or a willingness to learn).
